Pillow Placement

Are you unsure of where or how to place your throw pillows? Don’t worry, you’re not alone!

I’ve avoided this topic because I don’t like rules and genuinely believe you should style your lounge (or your home) however your heart desires! But, too many people have asked for this so, here we go! Keep in mind, it ultimately depends on YOUR sofa (size, structure, material, bulkiness etc.,) so use this as a guide, not a rule book.

L O V E S E A T S

here are two great ways to start styling your pillows on your loveseat. First up, is 2:2, 2 pillows on the left side, and 2 pillows on the right side. You will typically start with the bigger pillows on the outside and place your smaller pillows on the inside. Depending on the style of your loveseat, 22” pillows are a great size to start with, paired with 18” pillows on the inside.

Next up, is three pillows in the center! For this one, your center pillow should be the largest. This style is one of the exceptions to the “rule” and here, you should have your smaller pillows on the outside. 18”, 22”, 18” in that order!

S O F A S

With your full size, three seater sofa you can have a lot of fun and I encourage you to play around with different styles. If you consider yourself a beginner to the decorating world than you might find comfort starting here. I’d like to introduce you to 2:1:2 this is a safe and pretty standard way to start styling your pillows!

On a standard three-seater sofa, 2 pillows go on the left side, 1 pillow in the center, and 2 on the right side hence, 2:1:2. start with the bigger pillows on the outside and place your smaller pillows on the inside. Depending on the style of your sofa, 24”- 22” pillows are a great size to start with, paired with 18” pillows on the inside. Your center pillow can be. different shape altogether (lumbar, round, seashell, etc.,) or you can opt for a 16.” Go with your gut!

Next up, 3 pillows, all different sizes starting on the left hand side. 22”, 20”, 18” x 24” (lumbar). A simpler approach and a great option if you don’t want too many pillows.

S E C T I O N A L S

Now, if you have a sectional that seats more than three (where are my corner sectional people at?) You may enjoy following the 2:3:2 method! 2 pillows on the left side, 3 pillows in the center/corner, and 2 pillows on the right side, hence, 2:3:2. Again, depending on the size/structure of your sofa a good place to start is 22” and 20” pillows on the sides and three different sizes in the center. 22”, 20” and a lumbar pillow.

Another option to consider is 1:3:2. 1 pillow on the left side, 3 pillows in the center/corner, and 2 pillows on the right side!

Something to keep in mind, size IS important! A common problem people run into is buying to small of pillows which typically doesn’t provide the look you want. A good place to start is 22”, personally, I love starting with 24” pillows! Not only do I think they typically look the best but they also double as floor pillows for your guest. This is especially important for your event lounge!
